Chroma Aphotic

Another cover!

This has been a wild year. Chroma Aphotic was the culmination of weeks of planning, seven photoshoots, and countless hours pouring over details. I’m very happy to have worked with Vanguard Magazine. They’ve been on my radar for a while as being very fashion-forward but I never really expected to make the cut. A lot of what I do does not fit the common standard in the fashion world. My projects are almost always in the “other” category. Most feedback from respected outlets can be summarized as an overall glowing dissection but ends with “I don’t know how to use this.” In a way it’s kind of awesome, but means limited publication. A big turning point has been working with a new collaborator and learning how to properly package the material. The imagery has not changed at all, I’ve just gotten better at framing it for the intended audience. Much of that learning curve has been fine-tuned through the collaborative process with Stef. Not a photographer or visual creator, but a crucial part of the process by way of content development and image architecture, Stef has been lurking behind the scenes for a while, providing input and creative direction. Without the Stef-filter this project would not have happened.

So, thank you to Vanguard Magazine for giving me a platform to express my nonsense, and thank you to Stefano for holding the reigns, keeping me focused, and all the other ways you’ve contributed to this project. It’s refreshing to be on the same page from start to finish. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Cover #4… this year

Chroma Aphotic: Colour without light. Aphotic usually refers to the depth of the ocean where light no longer reaches. Creatures at that depth live in darkness. They navigate blind. Colour exists but they don’t see it. It has no meaning. This set started in black and white, indoors, shot late at night, before moving into bright natural light and blinding colour, before coming full circle and summarizing with a bright black and white shot during a bright afternoon. Every image is loaded with coded commentary that tells a story, but the iridescent minutia is lost to the casual observer.
